GATCO policy on small drones

GATCO is highlighting its policy on small drones which was published before the recent collision of a drone and passenger aircraft near Heathrow on 17 April. The policy, which calls for drone registration and marking and the immediate grounding of all non geo-fenced drones was formed after careful consideration over the past year using, in particular, evidence from the UK Airprox Board findings. The policy for small drones is:

1. Government should mandate geo-fencing with immediate effect, with non-compliant drones banned from flight until they meet the regulation

2. Government should mandate marking of drones to permit the identification of the owner, operator, or responsible person, to be determined to assist with tracing action to allow lesson learning from incidents

3. Government should mandate a register of drones, similar to the UK Civil Aircraft register
